WHY IS THE MEDIA INFLUENCED BY SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS?
  • As part of your answer please include your own definitions and differences between culture and social contexts.
  • Use the examples from the adverts we saw to illustrate your points.
The media output is dependant on what is socially accepted as well as morally correct, this applies to how the media text provide a message to the target audience, which should should provide a positive reaction. This ties in with the theory of how a person absorbs the information given to them, deciding whether or not to accept it. This then contributes to the vast majority of sales that an organisation has, due to a person either negotiating with an idea and enjoying it. This also has very close relation to the cultivation theory.

Media text such as the current Gillete advertisement on gender produced major controversy due to the arguable topics they brought up about men, and their expectations. The advert also referred to men running such patriarchal society and how they take advantage of women, especially sexually which is still a problem today.

One standard Gillete attempted to communicate was that men should avoid any contact with women if it involves any sexual affiliations as they should be treated with a higher demand of respect. This inflicted an argument between the audience and the producers as it's connoting that men should have no physical interactions with women, which clearly goes against a human's state of nature.
